San Diego Trip: Foodie Edition

This past week I was fortunate enough to travel down to San Diego with my boyfriend for a week of vacation and sunshine. My boyfriend’s really big into the food shows and considers himself to be a big foodie, so we decided to make this vacation all about food.

We used tvfoodmap.com to map out top restaurants featured on Man vs Food and Drivers, Dines and Dives. Being huge Mexican food lovers, we spent most of our time hopping between various Mexican food restaurants. This was a great experience for us as, sadly, we don’t have many Mexican restaurants in Vancouver.

We spent our first night in San Diego at the Best Western Island Palms hotel on Shelter Island. Beautiful hotel with amazing views of the water/marina. We spent a few days exploring different San Diego attractions, from the Cabrillo National Monument, to tide pools, and the San Diego Zoo. The last few days in San Diego, we actually stayed at the Hilton Del Mar. What an amazing hotel this was. Unfortunately we never made it to any of the horse races across from our hotel.

Here is a list of our favourite food places in San Diego:

1. Lucha Libre Taco ShopThis was our favourite food place in San Diego. The food was so good; we actually went back a second and third time before leaving town. Their fish tacos and burritos are unreal! Probably the best fish tacos we’ve had.

2. Phil’s BBQ

This place came highly recommended online, among many foodies, so we had to check it out. When there’s a 45 minute wait outside, and a lineup around the corner, you know the food is going to be good. We actually bought some Phil’s BBQ spice rub and bbq sauce to bring home with us.

Tip: if you sit at the bar, you can bypass the long lineups outside, and get served right away.

3. En Fuego Cantina
This was one of our favourite Mexican restaurants.

First impressions generally make or break a restaurant experience. The second we walked into the restaurant, there was a live band and a large group of people on the dance floor, and everyone seemed to be having a great time. The atmosphere in the restaurant was great, and seemed to be a fun little restaurant with delicious food!

4. Hash House a Go Go

We’ve actually been to Hash House in Las Vegas and the food was unreal! Large portions of food, and very reasonable prices. The second we got off the plane in San Diego, we went straight to Hash House for some amazing breakfast.

We had several other food places on our list to check out, but ran out of time. Let’s hear from you. Leave your comment below and let us know what your favourite food place is in San Diego
